About

How it All Started

We are dedicated to promoting rainwater conservation, helping reduce storm runoffs and building climate resilience in Houston by helping households capture and reuse rainwater through education, collaborations and equitable access to rainwater harvesting systems.

Houston’s underserved communities are often disproportionately impacted by flooding and may lack access to affordable water conservation resources. Bayou Barrels works to bridge that gap by conducting educational workshops, providing hands-on instruction on how to install and maintain rain barrels, and distributing free rain barrels to families in need. By empowering residents to harvest and reuse rainwater for outdoor use, we help reduce pressure on drainage systems, mitigate localized flooding, and create stronger, more resilient neighborhoods across Houston.

Uma Satapathy

Founder & Director, Bayou Barrels

My name is Uma Satapathy, and I am a student at the Awty International School in Houston, Texas with a deep passion for sustainability. I’ve always had an interest in environmental science, though what truly sparked my drive to make a difference was the structural disparity that I perceived throughout my own city concerning climate practices. Everywhere across Houston faces flood risks, but some underprivileged communities are particularly ill-equipped to deal with these dangers.

As I witnessed the growing effects of natural disasters and flooding on these vulnerable communities, I became motivated to not just raise awareness, but take action against these urgent issues. I founded my non-profit Bayou Barrels to promote sustainable water practices and support a ubiquitously climate-resilient Houston. Here at Bayou Barrels, we believe every household should have the resources required to conserve water for non-potable use and reduce flood risks.

Additionally, I created an 'Insights' page on the Bayou Barrels website, to make environmental education more accessible and engaging, while encouraging others to recognize that even small actions can lead to meaningful change. Through both initiatives, my goal is to inspire environmental responsibility, encourage sustainable solutions, and help build a future for everyone rooted in compassion, resilience, and collective action.
